In 2002, David Backhouse was chosen as the sculptor of a memorial to animals used by British forces in wartime, a ยฃ1 million fund campaign being launched by the novelist Jilly Cooper. Supported by the Animals in War Memorial Fund and sited at Brook Gate, Park Lane, on the edge of Hyde Park, the design featured two heavily laden, lifesize mules.
